CALGARY

Transformation is underway for this 80-acre site adjacent to Calgary International Airport. The project’s key objective is to adopt an open design approach, transforming a conventional enclosed shopping mall into a new urban centre with distinct social zones. The design aims to upgrade the existing mall while revitalizing the entire site and creating an urban social hub for visitors. It also seeks to establish a landmark with immediate access from Alberta’s busiest highway. Open-air boulevards are designed with new architecture and landscape designs for shops, restaurants, and entertainment facilities, which are planned and designed with a series of vibrant social zones.

New architectural designs are integrated with existing buildings in a respectful manner through material contrast and structural articulation, reflecting the history and new life of the buildings. Colonnade structures are designed in front of storefronts along the main street to provide transitional zones between indoor and outdoor environments and enhance the pedestrian experience with varying scales. The featured Food Lodge, located at the heart of the site, serves as a central hub connecting other public zones.
