DEERFOOT CITY

CALGARY

DF_Building E_Structube_Preliminary Desi

Transformation is taking place for this 80-acre site adjacent to the Calgary International airport. The key idea of this project is to adopt an open design approach which transforms a conventional enclosed shopping mall to a new urban centre with different social zones. The design goal is not only to upgrade the existing mall, but also revitalize the whole site and create an urban social heart for visitors and create a landmark with immediate access from Alberta’s busiest highway. Open-air boulevards are designed with new architecture and landscape designs for shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities which are planned and designed with a series of vibrant social zones.

New architectural designs are integrated with existing buildings in a respectful way through material contrast and structural articulation to reflect the history and new life of the buildings. Colonnade structures are designed in front of storefronts along the main street to provide transitional zones between indoor and outdoor environments, and enrich the pedestrian experience with different scales. The featured Food Lodge located at the heart of the whole site creates a central hub connecting other public zones.
